AAM Boston (italiano)

Friday, April 28th, 2006

New features/services in Museumland

Saturday, April 22nd, 2006

Next week we will launch the new version of Museumland. Need a couple of week to full work.

We still plan two new features/service that I hope will help museums to have more visibility

a) Press forwarding agency
how many times your museum send  a press release  without any result? Journalist trash 90% of press release they receive…but…when they need to write about a special topic they remember that at that time they receive a press release about the topic they need to write on…probably it is your press release?
So, I want to archive in Museumland your press releases as Journalist when need an information can easy find it in our press release archives.

b) Unique update page
how many request your web site have to transmit information about your museum to many different web sites? Like the site of your town, your province, your museums association etc…
So, what you think to update only a page, only once, every update you have (exhibition, opening hours, special event etc.)? We still work on a special software that when you update your record in Museumland, in automatic way many other page that need your information will be update. So your workers don’t need to loose time sending emails or update many pages.

Please, comments, critics, suggest, ideas etc on this two features.

Thanks

Mario

Live chat inside a museum

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

Many of us use AIM, Messenger and now Skype to chat, exchange documents, ideas, opinion etc.

Skype is available in a mobile version for Pocket PC, but now, thanks to a new company based in Vancouver EQO it is possible to have Skype also in many other mobile devices like TREO 650, Motorola etc.

So, witch connection with us? Just an idea, need follow-up and future development:

Using a mobile device (own mobile device, not a rented one) visitors can chat in real time with other visitors and, more significant, with a museum curator (or any other expert). Visitors can ask information in real time, asking questions about an item or an artwork etc, just chatting…

I repeat, is just an idea, to explore. Obviously it is convenient (for visitors) if they have a flat rate internet connection.

From your blackberry or from my Treo will be useful to chat to be more aware?

Webaroo

Friday, April 14th, 2006

Want to have an entire web site on your PDA or on your PC, free to read it offline when you travel or you use the PC in a park or every where without stay always online?

Webaroo appear as the right solution, it download a website on your disk with a very high compression rate, better than ZIP.

The main problem of this software is that don’t work on Mac and PALM sigh!!

Google Calendar

Thursday, April 13th, 2006

A new intersting tool from Google

Google Calendar

I just start to learn how it work but as a first impression for example will be very good for our blogs and for museums that can share in easy way calendars of events.

UPDATE (directly from Google Blog)

Last week, there was Google Calendar. This week, developers can start writing code that uses it. Enter the Google Calendar data API, which can be used to write external applications that query, create, and update Google Calendar events, so they’re available to Google Calendar users or other API-enabled applications.

My note: this change all things, complete interactivity between museums web sites and Google Calendar

Euro DevCon ‘90

Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

No, I don’t want to invent the time machine to go back to 90′

Just looking for me on Google (74.900 results…my ego…) I find (only in the cache copy) an article published in march 1990 on Italian Magazine Enigma, a magazine dedicated to Commodore Amiga.

The article write about me and other Italian colleagues  as developer for Commodore Amiga, when we participate to the European Developer Conference held in Paris from 6 to 8 February 1990…

When I remember that time I think that myself is part of archeology…consider also that I had my first computer in 1980 (a Tandy Radio Shack TRS80) and that I really produce incoming with my work on 1982 working on an Apple II when I was 14 years old ;-)

About ICOM

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

ICOM, the International Council of Museums is the international organization  of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world’s natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.

I’m ICOM member from 2004, I was (and I’m) very happy to become a member, I trust in ICOM mission and I try every time to support ICOM initiative and to involve many colleagues  in ICOM activities. But when I talk with colleagues I find that many of them are not aware about ICOM activities or are far from ICOM. In particular many young colleagues (due to my age..I consider young up to 40s ;-) ) don’t find that ICOM fit their need. On the base of this consideration, last august I propose the initiative of the Young Museum Professionals Group.

So, please, in the comments section of this post, write what you think about ICOM and ICOM activities and what you aspect from ICOM.

I also add a Poll about ICOM on the right sidebar.
